Not for Human Consumption: Made with Real Sugar!!!
Marketing is a fascinating thing to me because of the power it has to make you believe something in a manner that’s not entirely true. Take for instance the recent rise in products that claim to be “all natural” and “made from real sugar” like this is a good thing. I’m not here to debate HFCS vs. cane sugar, however, sugar is sugar and should be approached with...

Not for Human Consumption: Recreating the KFC...
This, my friends, is my non-advice for recreating the KFC Cheesy Bacon Bowl at home, with little effort and even less nutritional value. I do not actually recommend eating this. What you need: Prepacked Mashed Potatoes Microwave Popcorn Chicken Bacon Bits Shredded Cheese What you do: Open the mashed potatoes container, cram the rest of the ingredients into the container and...

The Breaks
So I had been having pain on the outside of my right foot for awhile now, a couple months or so, and decide I had better go get it checked out. Went to see my awesome doctor and he did the standard test and got x-rays. After waiting in the room watching and dodging the flies (horseflies in the doctor’s examine room is unnerving to say the least) he came in and showed me the little dark line...

Dusting Off
I have decided it’s time to start attempting a blog update on a daily basis, as much as possible. I have let myself slack off on this so it’s time to focus. Here are your updates! 30 Day HFCS Challenge - this is going well but not perfect. Without thinking about ingredients, I ordered a nice bowl of creamy tomato soup from Panera Bread. Finally went back and checked and found out they...

My First 30 Day Challenge - No HFCS
If you’ve seen “Supersize Me” or the follow-up TV series “30 Days” then this is basically where the idea of doing a 30 day challenge comes from for me.  I’ve been wanting to do something for awhile and finally came up with my first challenge. For the next 30 days I will consume no high fructose corn syrup to the best of my ability and knowledge. I hope this...

DAILY BURN 90 DAY CHALLENGE - WEEK 6
Today marks the halfway point for the 90 day challenge and things so far this week are looking great.  Last week was a little rough though because of a couple sick days and then an injury to my knee. Thankfully the injury was short lived and a couple days of rest took care of it. I think I must have just gone too far on my Saturday morning walk (7.5 miles) and ended up limping part of the way...

Daily Burn 90 Day Challenge - Week 5
This last week actually went quite well and I was able to really feel normal, whatever that means. The system is working for me and I’ve done it long enough that I can anticipate things and make changes before they happen. Over the last week I have lost 3.5 lbs and for a short period of time I was even number one in the challenge. (I’m currently at second, last time I checked) This is...

The Calorie Delusion: Why food labels are wrong
I found this article on New Scientist and while it gets a little technical at times it makes a good point.  Good read about food labels and their possible inaccuracies. (Link goes to the “to print” version) http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20327171.200-the-calorie-delusion-why-food-labels-are-wrong.html?full=true&print=true

What's For School Lunch?
Check out this interesting website showing school lunch photos from around the world.  It’s almost scary to me the kinds of “foods” we are feeding our children on a daily basis. http://whatsforschoollunch.blogspot.com/

Daily Burn 90 Day Challenge - Week 4
Wow, we are already a month into this challenge and this last week wasn’t too bad. I think I’m still trying to figure out the best mix of cardio and weight training to maximize my workouts while still keeping my eating as clean as possible. I had some slip-ups during the week but that’s pretty much expected and I’m a lot better at dealing with them. Looking at my fitness...

The 90-day Challenge - Week 3
Last week actually went quite well for me. I really feel like I am hitting my stride again and making good choices when it comes to food and exercise. Some of the things that used to be difficult are becoming pretty easy. I’m starting to really understand serving sizes and I’m getting pretty good at estimating calories.  I’ve also learned that it’s ok to special order foods...

The 90-day Challenge - Week 2
Week two of the Daily Burn 90-day Challenge has ended and I didn’t have the greatest week. I am focusing on the plus side which is that I haven’t gained weight this week. I’ve only lost about 0.2 lbs though. I had a hard time following my plan through the weekend and that did not help. I really need to refocus my efforts because I got stuck on another plateau recently. I...

Energy Levels
I was sitting here thinking about how things have changed for me since May and I realized that I don’t have the energy spikes like I used to have. It’s been so long now that I can’t remember the last time I fell asleep on the couch watching TV at 6:30 PM. That used to happen more than I’d like to admit. Sometimes I get a little tired in the afternoon but nothing close...

Week 1 Wrap-up
Just finished the first week of the 90 day challenge and it wasn’t too bad overall. I started the challenge with a gain on the first day so it took some time to work that off. In total for the week it’s looking like a loss of 6.7 lbs which is probably a bit more than I should be losing. Over time this will even out, it usually does. I like to weigh in every day because I like the...

Basic Food Math - Food Geekery →
Clicking the link above takes you to the post on Food Geekery. Pretty quick read about the very basics of reading food labels.  The rounding allowance has always struck me as a little convenient for food manufacturers and like any good thing it can be used in nefarious ways. Remember - packaged spelnda has 4 calories per packet. There’s no requirement on calorie listings if it’s...

Daily Burn 90 Day Challenge
So I have been using the website Daily Burn to track my healthy lifestyle changes and I really like it.  They have both a free and pro options and even the pro option is only $45/year.  I keep track of the foods I eat and the exercises that I do.  It is also set up with different goals and I’m getting more involved with the different challenges they have. As of August 17th I have been...
